Promoting Student Success in the Flipped Online Classroom: Learning and Accountability Through Homework Strategies

As online and hybrid classes have become increasingly more prevalent in higher education, the flipped classroom structure has emerged as a viable, evidence-based, option for healthcare programs. In classroom, students view pre-recorded video lectures complete reading assignments before class, synchronous class time can then be used active learning activities. Class sessions offer opportunities group work, review of complex content, access to instructor assistance with assignments. To effectively implement approach, must prepare prior time. One method encouraging student accountability is assign preparatory homework. This experimental study compared two types homework on measures achievement, satisfaction, ease use, perceived from assignments: concept maps or question-and-answer Study participants included 46 first year occupational therapy attending an foundational course. Treatment weekly completion either map set three over period weeks. Findings suggested that type were helpful promoting achievement. Results further revealed satisfaction greater group. It recommended other allied health instructors use reinforce classroom. The particular potential improve schema acquisition, critical thinking, deep learning, which turn support educational success.
